Straw Bale Construction is an affordable user-friendly alternative building material and system. Straw is a local highly renewable organic material, with minimal embodied energy. Straw bales are most successfully used as non-structural infill, in combination with a Timber Frame structure. Straw bale walls typically provide excellect insulation [ R-35 ], and are fireproof [ self-extinguishing ]. The only critical factor in using straw, it that it must be obtained dry, stored dry, and detailed to keep it dry during and after construction. The system is adaptable to many different climatic regions.
